Our Day on Holy Island

21st March 2022
We have had a wonderful day on Holy Island.   We began our visit by walking to the beach to meet up with rev Sam Quilty who led our beach service on the theme of St Cuthbert.  The children sang their song and shared their prayers based on the world and nature.  They also gathered stones to create a cross together.  It was a special moment and blessed by three swans flying overhead.

We then went back up to school to meet with Thelma Dunne from the Holy Island Archives.  She came into school to talk about the James B Graham rescue by the Lizzie Porter lifeboat 100 years ago in 1922.  Her mother was one of the women who helped pull the lifeboat out into the water with the tide on the way out.  She told the story of what happened and showed the children photographs of some of the people involved in the rescue.  It was fascinating and the children will be doing follow up work on this ahead of our next trip to Holy Island on 7th April.

After a picnic lunch and playtime the children then took the chance to do some field book sketching, inspired by the world around them.  We were lucky the sun was shining for us today.
