Chinese New Year 2025

29th January 2025

Today we enjoyed learning about and celebrating the Lunar New Year or Chinese New Year.  The children responded to the story of the great race of the animals to set the zodiac and the year we are now in (the snake!)  We were keen to check what animal our own birth year was as well.

We looked at how to write ‘Happy New Year’ in Mandarin and the children were challenged to make a giant snake from one end of the school to another - always a good way to help them practice their problem solving and team working skills.  They managed it in the five minute deadline with a fantastic snake with scales and patterns as well as a face.  See our video in the photos / video gallery (click here) to see the whole thing.  More impressively perhaps was how they also managed to tidy it all away efficiently.

In music, Mrs Cochrane explained about the Chinese music scales and the children performed a song with instruments.  This sounded brilliant with the glockenspiels all being played together.

We had a delicious Chinese lunch thanks to Olive with special decorations made by the art club children. We particuarly enjoyed the snake shaped biscuits as well as the fortune cookies.
